RUSSIA: Immigration chiefs back proposed language test for prospective workers
By Reuters.com

In an effort to tighten up immigration, the government has proposed mandatory language requirements that foreigners must meet before they will be allowed to work in Russia. In the proposed rules, those who intend to work in Russia for longer than one year will be required to take a language test that shows competence in the Russian language.

An exception to this rule would be for those who work for foreign firms or companies.

The proposed rule is in response to mounting resentment for those who do not speak the language which has resulted in racially motivated attacks. In recent years, there has been a rise in migration by those from ex-Soviet republics, many of them who are Muslim.

Russia has been amending its laws in order to deal with increasing migration by those who wish to take part in the economic boom.
