3.3 Million Brits will Move Abroad by 2050
By JustOverseas

01/02/2008

A new study claims millions of Brits seek homes abroad, to improve their quality of life.

The research by The NatWest International Personal Banking (NatWest IPB) and the Centre for Future Studies, surveyed the attitudes and opinions of British immigrants from across the world.

According to the survey by 2050 an entire generation of Brits will aim to move abroad to escape the hectic lifestyle in the UK.

The generation who will make this move has been referred to as the At Home Abroad generation or AHA.

Out of the 3.3 million people estimated to move by 2050, most of these people will move at retirement age, claims the study.

The attitudes collected revealed that over a third of Brits moved away for a better quality of life. Other top reasons for leaving the British Isles were for an increased standard of living and better cost of living.

Additionally 63% of Brits planned to never return to the UK feeling more at home abroad (AHA) while 91 percent of those questioned are happier than they were in the UK.

The trend in more Brits living abroad is also suggested to lead to a decreased sense of Britishness over time.

According to the results, Canada was titled the top country amongst expatriates, followed by New Zealand and Portugal in second and third place. Canada was praised for it’s for housing, the natural environment and the availability of consumer goods while New Zealand was loved for its schools and healthcare provision.

“The chance to work or retire abroad to a place in the sun has long been a desire for many Brits,” says Dave Isley, Head of NatWest International Personal Banking.

Isley also points out that the survey showed Brits who lived abroad were healthier, wealthier and happier.

“It is interesting that the study also reveals the motivation to leave is not just dissatisfaction with life in the UK. The prospect of a good lifestyle abroad appears to finally prompt the decision to make the final leap,” adds Isley.

1. Canada

2. New Zealand

3. Portugal
