Excerpted from the China Career Guide
China has the world‘s largest construction market, and it is the largest user of construction equipment. That lead is likely to continue. Over the next decade, China will build half the world‘s new buildings; currently two billion square meters of floor space are being added every year.
Key infrastructure projects are creating an unprecedented boom in the country’s steel production. China is the global leader in coal production as well as use, and the country’s undiminished appetite for the fuel is now driving up imports to record highs.
The engineering and manufacturing sector should see solid hiring this year. Among telecommunications, consumer electronics and home appliance manufacturers, the strongest demand is for mid-level engineers in product development. The auto industry in Southern China is expected to continue to grow, creating demand for engineers, as well as a strong need for general managers and factory managers. Demand remains consistently high for electronics and industrial engineers, supplier quality engineers, development program managers and operation directors at all levels.
Raises this year should average 5 to 15 percent. Professionals changing jobs or moving to another firm could see increases of 20 to 30 percent. Product development and industrial engineering professionals, as well as regional operations managers, will see the highest raises. Many salary packages will also include incentives such as bonuses.
