Excerpted from the Canada Career Guide

Canada has a diverse financial industry, which includes banks, trust and loan companies, credit unions/caisses populaires, insurance firms, securities dealers and exchanges, mutual fund companies and distributors, finance and leasing firms, pension fund management firms and independent financial advisers. The financial sector employs over 1.2 million workers and is a major contributor to the economy. In fact, Canada's banking system has been consistently ranked the soundest in the world.

Skills in Demand

Canadian companies are slowly refilling finance positions lost during the recession, and companies now positioned for growth are actively hiring finance professionals. Recent graduates with internship experience and accounting certifications have access to the best opportunities. That said, the entry-level market, though improving, continues to prove challenging.

Areas of Job Promise

Investment firms, retail brokerages, commercial banks and hedge funds are currently adding the most new positions, usually for highly skilled candidates.Occupations most in demand include financial analysts (particularly those with a strong combination of financial, technical and communication skills) and those who fulfill core accounting operations such as accounts payable, accounts receivable and collections.

Financial sector employers often boost salaries with substantial bonuses and non-monetary incentives such as additional vacation time, flexible scheduling and opportunities for professional development and telecommuting.
