In surveys of companies offering immediate employment, health care is the consistent winner. “There aren't enough nurses, home health aides, medical assistants and pharmacy technicians to fill vacancies at health care providers such as hospitals and clinics," says Dennis Damp, author of Healthcare Job Explosion. In addition, employment in occupations related to health care is also projected to increase. Damp states, “Like most employers, hospitals and schools need professionals in an array of business areas including management, finance, communications, information technology and administrative services."
However, the big question mark for the health care industry is health care reform. Pending health care reform is the ‘wild card’ that could affect both pay and employment prospects for professionals in diverse health care fields. Reform could add 30 million Americans to the insurance roles, spurring tremendous growth in the demand for health care labor. Yet, cost-containment measures built into a restructured health care system could constrain salaries.
