Excerpted from the United Kingdom Career Guide

The jobs outlook is bright for the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professions, according to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES). In fact, the concern for top UK companies is that there is a shortage for skilled engineering talent to feed the ever-increasing needs. The engineering sector of UKMA, the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA), along with BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, Siemens, Airbus and Nissan, recently instituted a ‘Talent Retention System’ (TRS) to promote engineering skills training, apprenticeship and vacancies to support retention of vital skills in growing sectors such as electronics, aerospace, automotive, renewable energy, bioscience, marine and nuclear.

SEMTA represents 130,000 companies and workforce of 1.7 million, and the organization estimates 205,000+ jobs will need to be filled by 2016 within key STEM areas, particularly in fast-growing industries like advanced manufacturing.
