Excerpted from the United Kingdom Career Guide
The UK IT jobs market is finally gaining strength after struggling with IT department belt tightening and hiring freezes over the past recessionary years. In fact, the IT sector is growing so quickly the industry is facing skills shortages. Careerbuilder.com notes many IT departments in Britain are facing a critical skills talent gap as they seek to add staff and create new jobs.
The IT jobs market in the UK: e-skills UK, the Sector Skills Council for Business and Information Technology, profiles the IT industry:
- Employment in the IT industry is predicted to grow by 2.19 percent annually – nearly five times faster than the UK average.
- The IT industry is forecast to need more than 500,000 new professionals to fill IT job vacancies over the next five years.
Highest demand is seen for system developers and project managers, and of greatest concern is the inability to find sufficiently-skilled applicants for critical vacancies.
