Job Search Overview
There are both formal and informal means to finding employment in Australia. Online job resources are expanding quickly. With the extremely high level of Internet usage in Australia, the Internet is now arguably the best place to access employment information. However, it is important to not limit a job search to a single method. An effective job search in Australia will incorporate numerous methods because jobs are advertised in different ways and some jobs are not advertised in traditional forms at all. More than half of jobs filled are not advertised and are filled through referrals, or obtained using a direct approach by job seekers through networking. This is referred to as the "hidden job market" and is a very important aspect in the job search process. Quite often it is not what you know but who you know.
Online Job Sites
The internet is a great place to start the job search journey and can be useful in many ways. There are numerous job search websites that allow job seekers to search for jobs across Australia and the world. They often allow the job seeker to specify the search criteria for location and industry type in order to narrow the search options. Some of the major Australian newspapers also reproduce the job ads appearing in the newspapers on their online job search sites. Increasingly, websites are publishing jobs that do not appear in the printed press.
CareerOne http://www.careerone.com.au/ One of Australia’s largest online job sites, which is now partnered with the global Monster job site, CareerOne lists more than 12,000 jobs daily. CareerOne also lists all the job ads that appear in the News Limited newspapers around the country (covering about 80 percent of Australia’s newspapers). As well as job search, one can also create a career profile and résumé/CV and make them available to prospective employers through the CareerOne website. Jobseekers can develop a URL for individual résumés/CVs and track job applications. This website also features articles on careers and job searching from the News Limited press, as well as tips on résumé/CV writing. The site can be used in mobile applications, with apps for both iPhones and Android machines currently available; RSS feeds are also available.

Newspapers that Publish Job Advertisements
All major daily metropolitan newspapers, such as The Age in Melbourne, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Courier Mail in Brisbane and The Australian have large job classifieds sections each Saturday that can also be accessed through their websites. In addition, the major papers feature weekly specialized sections focusing on different industries, including IT and marketing, that usually include job ads for those industries. Local suburban newspapers also have job sections advertising jobs in the local area. The preferred location of work will affect which newspaper to look at for best job search results.
The Australian http://www.theaustralian.com.au The Australian is Australia’s national newspaper. It publishes job ads each Saturday, while specialist sections such as ‘Media, IT and Higher Education’ also feature relevant job ads.
