Job Search Overview

As with most countries, there are both formal and informal means of finding employment in Australia. Online job resources are now ubiquitous and, given the extremely high level of Internet usage in Australia, the Internet is now arguably the best place to access employment information, and it is assumed when applying for most positions that some Internet research has been done. It is important, however, that the jobseeker not limit a job search to a single method such as Internet jobs boards. An effective job search in Australia will incorporate numerous methods, because jobs are advertised in different ways — and some jobs are not advertised through traditional channels at all.

Online Job Sites

SEEK is Australia’s most prominent jobs-listing website, and posts thousands of jobs from recruiters and companies around Australia and New Zealand in many different industries and more than 215 occupations. The website facility ‘My Account and Tools’ offers the ability to add jobs to a shortlist. Other free services offered on the SEEK website include ‘Job Mail,’ ‘Job Seeker Profile’ and the ‘Application Tracker.’ It also publishes articles and tools relevant to job hunting and career development in the career resources area. SEEK has specialized zones for different categories of job hunters, including a section for jobs paying more than 150,000 AUD and one for volunteering, and also offers online learning opportunities.
