All foreign nationals traveling to Australia, except New Zealand citizens, require appropriate visas prior to arrival. Australian visas are categorized as temporary or permanent depending on the length of stay permitted by the visa. Australia has more than 150 visa subclasses.
New Zealand citizens who have entered Australia on valid passports have unrestricted rights to employment in Australia. With the exception of New Zealand citizens, every foreign national traveling to Australia should have an appropriate visa prior to arrival.
General Visa Applications Process and Requirements
Visa applications are processed by Australian embassies and consular posts around the world. Visas must be applied for at the local consulate, which is determined by the applicant’s country or state of residence.
All foreign students wishing to pursue studies in Australia must obtain a student visa. The student visa is a temporary visa that is valid for the duration of the course of study.
When applying for a visa, the applicant must provide very detailed information, including exhaustive documentation of his/her individual, extended and multi-generational family background. Generally, only Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who have entered Australia on valid passports have unrestricted rights to employment in Australia.
Entry Visas and Residence Permits
Foreign nationals who are planning a holiday visit or a short business trip to Australia need to apply for either visas or ETAs, which allow the holder to stay up to three months in Australia. Those planning to travel to Australia for a short tourism trip or for a brief business visit (e.g., to attend a meeting or conference) may be eligible to apply for an ETA.
