In spite of increased competition from other countries, South Korea will remain a major player in the global IT market, and the high skills of its workforce will help drive the country’s economic growth.
IT spending is expected to increase 6.6 percent this year, reaching 21,930 billion KRW. South Korean consumers will continue their IT purchases, as tablets and notebook hybrids see strong growth. Cloud computing, IT outsourcing and software applications will drive IT enterprise growth, with IT services sales likely to grow 8.6 percent this year.
Areas of Job Promise
Virtualization and Big Data: Korea’s emerging virtualization and big data industries are struggling to find enough skilled workers. As businesses adopt these technologies, firms offering these services are facing a shortage of experienced professionals. The greatest demand has been for technical sales specialists and business development professionals. Those with bilingual ability and hands-on technical experience are in particular demand.
Cloud computing: Competition has been so high for cloud computing engineers that they could command raises of as much as 20 percent when they change jobs.
