Excertped from Japan Career Guide

Demand for sales and marketing professionals will depend on the strength of the Japanese economy, according to recruiting consultancy Michael Page International. The greatest demand will be for candidates in online sales. The shortage of digital marketing professionals will increase this year as companies increase their focus on online and social media platforms. Brand managers are also expected to be in high demand.

Areas of Job Promise

Chemical: Strong hiring is anticipated this year. Recruiting firm Robert Walters anticipates the particular need for junior-level candidates who are fluent in English. Because the shortage of candidates is expected to continue, it is likely that Japanese companies will increase hiring of foreign candidates.

Consumer and retail: As Japanese consumers continue to increase their e-shopping habits, demand has grown for skilled e-commerce professionals at all levels. Hays is seeing high demand for specialized, senior-level professionals with solid market experience, networks and a strong strategic mindset.

IT: Vacancies in sales and marketing have increased for a variety of roles from junior to senior levels. Hays notes demand for alliance managers, product marketing, marketing communication and public relations professionals. The greatest number of openings are at the junior level. Because of the shortage of suitable candidates, employers will consider hiring non-Japanese sales staff. However, Robert Walters cautions Japanese language skills will still be essential.
