Excerpted from the France Career Guide

The tourism industry is a major source of revenue for France; it has a major effect specifically on the economic vitality of coastal regions and ski stations. France is the most visited country in the world, with nearly 80 million business and leisure travelers annually. Many of the tourism-related jobs are seasonal in nature, meaning that many positions are temporary CDD contracts. The high-travel seasons are winter, summer and school holidays (vacances scolaires).

After several years of declining numbers, tourism in France is experiencing an upswing. Experts forecast growth in the hotel sector, with an increase in both room occupation and prices. Following the events of the Arab Spring, many French tourists prefer to travel closer to home rather than the usual preferred destinations of North Africa or the Middle East.

Certification and Education Requirements

France prides itself on its ancient culinary traditions and culture of hospitality. The main difference between the tourism sector in France and in other countries is that even to work in a restaurant or hotel, one needs to have undergone a minimum amount of professional training; students without any specialized service training are not hired.
