Engineers are required for the continued development of the country’s infrastructure. Currently, engineers are in short supply.At present there are about 125,000 engineers, or 1 in every 6,600 people, fewer than in China or Brazil, and fewer than required for development to continue.
Engineers rank second place in Manpower’s latest Talent Shortage Survey. To address the engineering labor shortage, the government has implemented the Plan Estratégico para la Formación de Ingenieros 2012-2016 (Strategic Plan for Engineering Education), which aims to create 10,000 new engineers annually, and to double that figure by 2021.

While engineers in all specialties are required, there is need in particular for engineers specialized in agroindustrial, high technology and energy.
The automotive and manufacturing industries report having the most difficulty filling vacancies.Industrial engineers in particular are needed in manufacturing and industry.
