Excerpted from the Italy Career Guide

Italy's information and communication technology (ICT) market is the fourth-largest in Europe; recent figures indicate that the country is home to more than 90,000 active companies and 390,000 employees. Italy is also Europe’s third-largest market for the communications equipment and services industry, and the second-largest mobile communications market in Western Europe.

However, broadband coverage and penetration rates are lower than in neighboring France or Germany. In order to address this, the Italian government has recently established a ‘Digital Agenda,’ which is in line with the EU's Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE), a series of initiatives that aim to help Europe's citizens and businesses capitalize on digital technologies. Unfortunately, Italy lags in its implementation of the DAE, and as a result, its ICT sector is forecasted to suffer another fall in the market this year of nearly 6 percent. ICT sales dropped by 1.8 percent in Italy last year, ICT services fell by 4.7 percent and the telecom sector dropped 3.5 percent.

Areas of Job Promise

Despite its economic woes, Italy’s information technology needs are growing, and the demand is being driven by several different players. One such segment is large firms representing the utilities, retail and manufacturing sectors who are making a push to upgrade their current technology. Small and medium sized manufacturing companies from the fashion, furniture, food and mechanical automation industries are also investing in infrastructure software for new applications and in system hardware to help make them more productive and to enter new markets. Increasingly, even small Italian companies are seeing the value of investing in automation processes to help them compete in the market more effectively.
