Canada’s ICT industry is the largest private R&D investor in Canada. Ten of Canada’s 22 top R&D spending companies are in ICT; Research in Motion (RIM) is Canada’s top corporate spender on R&D.

All of the world’s top ten largest software companies, such as IBM, SAP and Microsoft, have R&D operations in Canada. In fact, Canada has the world’s second-highest number of global software companies, after the USA. There are 32,700 ICT companies operating in Canada, and 80 percent of these are in the software and computer services sectors. Canada also has expertise in simulation technologies, and it is home to Electronic Arts’ motion capture studio, one of the largest in the world.

Areas of Job Promise

The IT industry is rapidly changing and employers are seeking workers with a combination of IT skills and domain experience – for example, systems analysis and design combined with marketing, or e-health and ICT expertise.IT professionals with a business understanding or background are also in high demand, especially information systems analysts and consultants/business analysts, database analysts and data administrators, and computer and information systems managers. Desired business skills include marketing, accounting and finance competencies.

Emerging IT Occupations

Emerging fields include big data, mobile computing, social media, cloud computing and the consumerization of IT.

Canada’s Association of Information Technology Professionals (CIPS)

CIPS represents more than 6,000 IT professionals in Canada. Its mission is to help define and foster the IT profession by encouraging and supporting workers while advancing the theory that drives the industry. CIPS is accessible to everyone in Canada through its local sections and provincial bodies. Its special interest groups act as forums for high-priority topics such as human-computer communications and processing and pattern recognition. CIPS members receive such benefits as access to a national network of IT professionals, monthly meetings and educational events. The CIPS website provides visitors with background information, membership information and application, a code of standards, the latest news and an events calendar. CIPS national programs include certification of IT professionals and accreditation of computer science, software engineering and MIS programs in Canadian colleges and universities. An online job board, with free resume posting for three months for members, is offered.

Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC)

ITAC represents 1,300 companies that operate in the computing and telecommunications hardware, software and electronic-content sectors of the IT industry. ITAC's community of companies accounts for more than 70 percent of the 572,000 jobs, 140.5 billion CAN in revenue, 6.0 billion in research and development investment, 31.4 billion in exports and 11.4 billion in capital expenditures that the ICT industry contributes annually to the Canadian economy. The association focuses on creating a business environment within the industry that facilitates growth and development by developing policies and standards for IT professionals. The ITAC website provides visitors with an abundance of information about the organization itself, membership, e-commerce, books and resources and events. ITAC has offices in Mississauga, Ottawa, Montreal and British Columbia.
