Excerpted from the Brazil Career Guide
Brazil is one of the world’s engineering hotspots. Driven by huge projects, engineering salaries have seen significant increases in the past year. However, in Brazil, it is the local salaries that have shown the largest growth, while salaries for imported talent have remained relatively steady, according to global recruiter Hays, which notes the Brazilian government is pursuing ambitious plans “to develop the deep water pre-salt fields with multi-billion dollar investments.”
The 2014 soccer World Cup, the 2016 summer Olympics and other international games to be hosted by Brazil over the next few years will generate numerous engineering, construction and architecture opportunities in the 12 cities hosting games.
Areas of Job Promise
In addition to electric/electronic, civil and mechanical engineers, important engineering specialties in Brazil include agronomic, aeronautic, navy, mining and environmental engineers. Recent graduates with practical experience are often hired for these specialties. The number of foreign engineers in Brazil is also growing in response to these shortages.
Oil and gas: Brazil’s oil and gas sector is a major recruiter of engineers, and professionals with relevant experience are in great demand.
Naval construction: Recruiting is on the rise for professionals with experience in naval construction and commissioning, however the requirements are very high.
Logistics: This is a great time for logistics professionals, according to Hays. These professionals have the opportunity to work on the expansion and construction of airports and the expansion of ports.
Organizations and Trade Associations
