Sweden is one of the world’s leading digital economies. The country grabbed top honors, out of 70 countries, in The Economist’s most recent Digital Economy ranking, which evaluates the use of ICT as a tool for economic growth. And twice in a row, Sweden ranked number one in the World Economic Forum's Global Information Technology Report.
Sweden is definitely wired. Nearly 90 percent of Swedes have Internet access, and despite having just over nine million residents in Sweden, there are 12 million mobile phone subscriptions in the country. Sweden was also a pioneer in offering e-government services to its residents and has had an e-government task force since 2003.
Areas of Job Promise
Vinnova, a Swedish government agency promoting R&D, reports the next 'big things' in Swedish ICT include machine-to-machine communication and robotics. Other areas of growth in the Swedish ICT market include cloud computing and initiatives to support the new national digital agenda, which aims to use “IT to achieve growth, welfare, democratic and climate objectives.”
Despite these advances in Sweden, Empirica, a private international research and consulting firm based in Bonn, Germany, predicts the EU, as a whole, will face a shortage of 384,000 ICT jobs by 2015. “ICT practitioner jobs are highly resistant to the crisis, with unemployment 40 to 50 percent lower than general rates,” according to Werner B. Korte, CEO of Empirica. “Data shows the e-skills gap will amount to between 1.7 percent and 13 percent of unfilled vacancies by 2015 in Europe.”
