Engineers play a critical role in shaping Spain’s future and are always in demand. Clean and renewable energy, desalination, waste management and aerospace engineering are prime areas of opportunity for engineers in Spain. Occupations especially in demand at the moment include:
- engineering director
- industrial director
- mechanical engineer
- process manager
- technical engineer
Spain is a world leader when it comes to clean and renewable energies. Spain is currently Europe's leading country, and second in the world, for installed solar thermal electric capacity; second in Europe and fourth in the world for installed wind power; and second both in Europe and globally for the photovoltaic sector. In fact, more electricity is currently generated in Spain using renewable energies than through nuclear power.The government aims to have at least 20 percent of energy demand met with clean energy by 2020.
Certification and Education Requirements
There are two levels of engineering studies in Spain: engineer and technical engineer. Engineers must study for six years, while technical engineers study for three years and have a limited license.

Asociación de Ingenieros Industriales de Madrid (AIIM) Madrid Association of Industrial Engineers http://www.aim.es/index.asp (Spanish) This is a professional body for industrial engineers in the Madrid area that organizes activities that facilitate the personal and professional development of industrial engineers. It also deals with cooperation with industry, authorities and institutions or corporations in engineering-related activities in technical, scientific, industrial and economic matters.
