Overview
In Australia there are two methods of finding employment: formal and informal. The formal method is facilitated by applying for positions advertised in newspapers or on websites. Many jobs are not advertised, and are filled by informal methods of employment, including referrals or by directly approaching an organization. For jobseekers in Australia, creating contacts and having a referral network is very important. This often starts from a student’s first day at university. It is also very important in the semi-skilled and unskilled employment market, as the majority of those positions are not advertised.
