Excerpted from the Netherlands Career Guide

The Netherlands, and the Amsterdam region in particular, is a global banking and financial services hub. Global Finance’s ranking of the World’s 50 Safest Banks, based on data from Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings, ranks three Dutch banks among the top ten: Bank Nederlandse Gemeenten (BNG), Nederlandse Waterschapsbank and Rabobank. Several of The Netherlands 12 Global Fortune 500 companies are in the financial sector, including financial services giant ING, insurer Aegon and Rabobank. The Dutch banking sector focuses on traditional banking services such as private and business loans.

Jobs In Demand

  • In general, financial sector recruitment levels in The Netherlands have been slowly improving over the past year despite the ongoing Eurozone financial crisis. Demand is high for experienced specialists, especially those with Basel II and III skills, tax accountants and transfer pricing specialists.
  • Candidates with a high technology background and experience working at one of the 'Big Four' audit companies are also in demand in financial services, particularly for junior finance positions. However, recruitment for senior-level professionals is weak and the trend is expected to continue this year.
  • As banks begin to build anti-fraud/crime systems, demand for economic financial crime specialists and program managers is rising. Employers also seek market, credit and operational risk specialists.
