Work in Chicago
Chicago is one of the United States’ premier cities, located in Illinois along Lake Michigan. With a population of more than nine million people, the city is a financial, transportation and industrial mecca.
The “Windy City” offers a population as varied as its climate. Caucasians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Irish, Germans, Italians and Poles, Swedes and Serbs make up sizeable ethnic groups.
Chicago offers a lower cost of living than several other comparable American cities, such as New York, Los Angeles and Boston. It is the country’s second largest financial center, with the accompanying second largest central business district. Chicago is also the third largest inter-modal port in the world, and has the country’s second largest public transportation system.
Among its largest employers, are aircraft manufacturer Boeing Company, pharmaceutical giant Abbot Industries, the Global Hyatt Corporation, media giant the Tribune Company, and the Sara Lee Corporation.
More than 130,000 Chicagoans work in the booming health care field, with more than 120,000 working in both professional services and finance/insurance. Computer software engineers and support professionals are expected to be among the top positions over the next several years. Other areas expecting growth are construction workers, security guards and customer service representatives.
