Work in Atlanta
There is more to Atlanta than Southern belles in hoop skirts and peaches. As the capital and largest city in Georgia, the Atlanta metro area population tops four million, making it the ninth-largest metro area in the United States. The median income for a household in Atlanta is just over $51,000 and for a family, it tops $55,000.
Atlanta, and its suburbs, are home to several Fortune 500 companies such as The Coca-Cola Company, BellSouth, United Parcel Service, Home Depot and Georgia Pacific. Other large employers include media giant Cox Enterprises, Delta Air Lines and Sun Trust Banks.
Tourism is a priority for the state, with the creation of the Georgia Tourism Foundation. Another area expected to grow is information technology. Small businesses also contribute strongly to Atlanta’s economy.
On-line job sites are available and often include job fair listings (http://atlanta.preferredjobs.com/). The Atlanta Daily World, aimed at the city’s sizeable African-American population, contains a job section and a business directory (http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?brd=1077).
Atlanta hosts the Peach Bowl, a college football game, and the Peachtree Road Race, the world’s largest 10K race. The city also played host to the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics and has four different major league sports: baseball, football, basketball and hockey.
