Excerpted from the South Africa Career Guide
The sanctions and boycotts imposed on South Africa during the 1980s had
a severe adverse impact on employment in the corporate sector in particular. Following
the normalization of political relations with the countrys major
trading partners, there was an increase in international competition that
also negatively affected the corporate sector. Although the introduction
of fiercer competition will benefit the South African economy in the long
run, painful adjustments are necessary to bring the South African corporate
sector up to speed with some of its international competitors.
Unemployment in South Africa is high, in large part due to a shortage
of skilled workers. Major areas of employment include financial services,
business services, and mining.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete South
Africa guide.
