Excerpted from the Germany Career Guide
Mechanical
engineering is the largest industrial employer in Germany and is the
most important economic sector. It comprises almost 6,000 companies,
just over 873,000 employees and has a worldwide turnover of more
than 245 million USD.
Much of
Germany's economy is based on engineering skills applied to imported
raw materials to become cars, mobile phones and machinery (one
quarter of total gross domestic product).
Germany is the global market leader in 17
of 31 sub-industries. Most recently, the export rate was 78 percent.
This success is based upon consistent innovation, which very quickly
generates products that are ready to go into serial production.
The high level of engineering is
what makes German products attractive at home and abroad. But German
production is expensive when compared with other countries, so the
product quality has to be extremely high to correspond with the
production costs.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete guide.
