Excerpted from the Germany Career Guide

The financial services sector in Germany is centralized. Most major German and international banks have their head offices in Frankfurt--thus its nickname "Main-hatten." According to the Frankfurt area chambers of commerce, the region employs fewer than 150,000 people in the banking and insurance industry. In contrast, the financial services market in London employs more than 300,000 people.

Most German banks have a low market capitalization and are high on the list of potential takeover candidates for the global banking leaders. Consequently banking employees work in a somewhat risky career environment, with restructuring and takeovers endangering their jobs. In 2001 and 2002, most banks went through major restructuring resulting in the loss and relocation of many jobs (many to New York and London).

This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete guide.
