Paris was
visited by 25 million tourists, an increase of 500,000 or two
percent from the previous year, making the French capital the most
visited city in the world. In addition, the French tourism board
reported that Paris hosted 272 events, the largest number of
conferences and trade shows in the world. Yet the country ranks only
third in tourist revenues (32 billion euro) among neighboring
European countries, such as Spain.
While tourism levels remain strong, the
hospitality industry declined recently. A tourism study conducted by
the French tourism office and the French statistics office NSEE
found that the number of visitors to France’s hotels fell for the
third year in a row. Between May and September—the period that
accounts for around half of all French hotel business—the number of
overnight stays decreased year-on-year by one percent to 94.7
million. The study attributes the decline mainly to a 2.2 percent
drop in the length of the average hotel stay.
