Excerpted from the France Career Guide

Confronted with an unfavorable economic landscape, most companies in France, regardless of their size or activity, are avoiding increasing their employee headcounts for the foreseeable future. Employment prospects in mid-level and senior managerial positions are still healthy, but will increase at a much slower rate than in recent years. This trend will mostly affect the prospects of freshly graduated younger professionals, since French employers prefer experienced candidates.

Historically, French companies have preferred hiring people on fixed-length contracts. Recently, however, companies have been more willing to hire people with a contract of indeterminate length.
