   :: Employment Trends

Excerpted from the France Career Guide

Unemployment is France’s primary economic problem. Future growth in the manufacturing sector is vital to sustain overall economic growth in the country. Almost 10 percent of France’s total registered workforce (approximately 27 million people) is unemployed. According to the national statistics agency INSEE, growth in the private sector, which accounts for about 15.4 million jobs, has been minimal. Job gains in the service sector barely offset continuing manufacturing job losses. According to INSEE, service sector jobs, which constitute almost two-thirds of private sector jobs, grew by only one percent in recent years, adding 99,000 new jobs. During the same time period the manufacturing sector lost 70,000 jobs.
