Excerpted from the Finland Career Guide
Finland’s well-managed economy
continues to place it in high regard among global economic
powerhouses. For the third consecutive year, Finland topped the
World Economic Forum’s list of most competitive economies, outpacing
the United States in second place.
Having recovered from the worst
economic recession in its history in the early 1990s, Finland’s
economy achieved a record performance in 2006. Preliminary estimates
put GDP growth at six percent, among the highest in the OECD. Among
the west European countries, possibly only Ireland did better.
Growth was fed largely by successful exports. Demand in Asia, in
particular, has brought in orders for Finnish industry and many
engineering companies are booked solid. Nokia's net sales figure is
already higher than the entire Finnish budget and the mobile phone
giant made a record profit of EUR 4.3 billion. Unemployment has
fallen to eight percent, which is below the EU average, and is
predicted to drop again.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Finland guide.
