The numbers tell the story of
Austria’s tourism industry. Twenty-nine million tourists – more than
three and a half times the country’s total population - visited
Austria in 2005, a three percent increase over the previous year.
There were 9.4 million trips by Austrians to resorts in their own
country. And optimism remains high for tourist traffic in future
years. A study commissioned by Austria’s Economics Ministry,
conducted by the economic research institute WIFO, predicts an
increase in the number of summer tourists, with a pattern of shorter
stays, but more spending per visit, resulting in an increase in
earnings.
Austria is one large picturesque
backdrop of a country, making it one of the most tourist-intensive
countries in the world. The number of overnight stays of US,
Belgian, UK and French tourists showed a substantial growth. Stays
of Dutch and Italian tourists went down slightly, while those of
German and Swiss guests remained unchanged compared to the previous
year. The provinces of Tyrol and Vorarlberg and the town of Salzburg
reported an above-average rise in tourist revenue.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete guide.
