Housing costs in India vary widely from city to city. Apartment rents in center-city Mumbai and New Delhi are the highest in India on a per-square meter basis. A 100 square meter (1,076 square feet) apartment in Mumbai averages 2,550 USD per month and a 90 square meter (969 square feet) apartment in New Delhi averages 4,500 USD per month.
By contrast, a 100 square meter apartment in Bangalore rents for an average of 785 USD per month and a 30 square meter apartment in the Noida suburb of Delhi rents for an average of 550 USD per month.
Under Indian law, it is illegal for foreigners (except those of Indian origin) to own immovable property unless the foreigner has become a resident of India. Foreigners who have become residents in India may only purchase property after receiving permission from the Reserve Bank of India.
The hiring of household help, such as maids and cooks, is prevalent among locals and expatriates in India. Salaries of household help are very low by Indian or Western standards. Some maids, particularly those without training or English language education, can make as little as 20 USD per month. However, experienced household help (particularly those who can speak English) make around 100 USD per month.
