Excerpted from the USA Career Guide

Overall, engineering employment is expected to increase. Since the number of engineering degrees granted has remained fairly constant, that should result in a shortfall of professionals, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. Although only a relatively small proportion of engineers leave the profession each year, many openings will arise from replacement needs. Many engineers transfer to management, sales, or professional occupations.

Projected employment growth varies by specialty; electrical and electronics engineers are expected to enjoy the greatest demand in the field.
