Both English and Cantonese were the
primary languages in Hong Kong in the last century. Nevertheless,
with Hong Kong’s reunion with PRC and followed by the recent
economic growth in Mainland China, Mandarin (also known as
Putonghua) has gained ground over the last 10 years. English and
traditional Chinese are the official written languages in both the
public and the private sectors. It may be wise for those wishing to
do business in Hong Kong to master some words and key phrases in
Cantonese.
Although Western influence has
filtered into Hong Kong, one should not assume that business is
conducted the same way as in Western countries. Tradition and
culture are still big parts of the business world, and the ability
to adapt to these customs may influence a company’s stand.
Confucianism is an important aspect of Chinese culture, and one
should respect the ethical and social behaviors which emphasizes
relationships and virtue. This notion is present in both business
and social circles.
This is just a sample of what
you'll find in the complete Hong Kong guide.
