   :: Cultural Advice

Excerpted from the Sweden Career Guide

Because of the need to maintain cooperation among all equally, it may be difficult for those living in Sweden to say no, so they have developed many polite ways of indicating negativity. Swedes may say things like, “this may be difficult”, or say “nja,” combining the Swedish words for yes (ja) and no (nej), when they really mean they won’t, can’t, or don’t want to do what’s being asked. Sometimes you might hear “tja”’; this, too, is a way of expressing negativity softly, and it really means something like, “It doesn’t look like I’ll be able to do that.”

This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Sweden guide.
