General Business - Sales & Marketing |
Excerpted from the Germany Career Guide
General
business in Germany, as in most other economies, is very
heterogeneous. On the one hand, large global players are well known
and employ hundreds of thousands of people. On the other hand, the
majority of employees work for small- to medium-sized companies. A
particularly strong pillar in the German economy is the
mittelstand (mid-sized company). This term describes companies
with a size of generally 250 to 2,500 employees and annual revenues
between 200 million EUR to 2 billion EUR. They are located very
often in rural or suburban areas and are equally often
founder-managed with a strong family influence in the second or
third generation. They constitute a strong force in many industry
sectors, particularly in engineering and manufacturing, but also in
information technology or several niche markets. They offer a calmer
environment, consider themselves a stronghold of stable structures,
and often have a close relationship between workers/employees and
owner/management. The Mittelstand commands a considerable
foothold in political decision-making and has a strong lobby on all
political levels. It finds itself at the very center of one of the
first action plans of the new German federal government to boost the
economy.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete guide.
