On a per capita basis, Denmark is
ranked number three in Europe for pharmaceutical product exports and
number two for R&D spending in the pharmaceutical industry. This
investment demonstrates Denmark’s considerable technological
competence within the sector. Industry heavyweights -- such as
Pharmacia & Upjohn, AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk, NeuroSearch, BASF,
Radiometer, Coloplast, Lundbeck, Leo Pharmaceuticals, Ferring and
ALK-Abelló -- are located in the region, along with 250 smaller and
medium-sized biotech companies, employing 40,000 people (two-thirds
of them on the Danish side) and generating annual exports of 4 EUR
billion. Most recently Biogen, one of the world’s largest biotech
companies, has set up production facilities from which it plans to
cover the entire European market.
