Business Organizations, Trade
Councils and Social Networking Groups
There are many business organizations
and trade councils in China and these may serve as meaningful
resources for the jobseeker. Some trade organization and business
councils are based outside China and many countries around the world
have organizations geared to helping those looking to do business in
China. These are also worth a look.
China itself recognizes only one
government-sponsored workers’ organization, the All China Federation
of Trade Unions (ACFTU). The ACFTU is state-controlled and has a
history of failing to represent its members adequately. The ACFTU
has about 103 million members. Independent trade unions are illegal
in China. As China is now a member of the WTO, pressure is
increasing from other countries for China to respond more favorably
to worker rights. Although China is also a member of the
International Labor Organization (ILO), China has not revised its
labor laws to reflect the ILO’s ideology. China does not recognize
the rights of workers to establish organizations of their own
choice. Those trying to organize workers are usually detained.
