Belgium has a large construction and mechanical engineering sector, accounting for a large portion of Belgium's employment and gross national product (GNP).
 
Like many other countries, Belgium has experienced mergers within the financial field, mostly between companies in the insurance and banking industries. Most of the mergers were orchestrated in order to increase Belgian banks' roles in the preparation for the introduction of the euro.
 
However, sales and marketing are not as popular as other fields. As in many parts of Europe, sales and marketing positions in Belgium have lower prestige than do positions in the fields of engineering, law, or finance.
