Excerpted from the Australia Career Guide
In general, the business day is more carefully defined in Australia than in many other countries, at least for workers and staff. It begins at 9 am and ends at 5 pm, with senior managers perhaps staying in their offices until 6 pm or so. It is not uncommon to socialize in the local bar after the workday with ones office colleagues, but travel time between home and work is a real consideration. Instead of going out, people often head home, to the gym, or to the beach after work.
People living and working in Australia should be careful of what they ask associates
to do, particularly when theyre asking somebody to do something they could
very well handle themselves. Australians are not keen on people who seem
to be pulling rank. In addition, Australian culture is not as gung-ho about
business achievement as some other western cultures are. Many Australians
are most comfortable accomplishing a reasonable goal without undue sacrifice.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Australia guide.
